Staff Software Engineer (Java) – Trading Systems

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer with a strong Java background and proven experience building trading systems or capital markets platforms. You will play a senior technical leadership role, working on high-performance, low-latency systems that support trading, pricing, or market data workflows.

This role is fully remote within Europe and suits someone who enjoys both hands-on engineering and architectural ownership.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and evolve high-performance Java-based trading systems
• Take architectural ownership of key components and services
• Work closely with trading, quantitative, and product teams to translate requirements into robust technical solutions
• Ensure systems meet low-latency, high-throughput, and high-availability requirements
• Lead technical decision-making, including system design, tooling, and best practices
• Review code and mentor senior and mid-level engineers
• Improve system observability, resilience, and scalability
• Contribute to incident analysis and performance tuning in production environments

Required Skills & Experience

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Expert-level Java (Java 11+, ideally Java 17+)
• Strong experience with trading systems, such as:
• Order management systems (OMS)
• Execution platforms
• Market data systems
• Risk, pricing, or post-trade systems
• Deep understanding of:
• Multithreading and concurrency
• Low-latency system design
• JVM performance tuning
• Experience with distributed systems and messaging (e.g. Kafka, FIX, gRPC, AMQP)
• Strong knowledge of system design, data structures, and algorithms
• Comfortable working in a remote, international environment
• Fluent English (spoken and written)

Nice to Have

• Experience with FIX protocol
• Background in investment banking, hedge funds, prop trading, or fintech
• Cloud experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Experience with Kubernetes and containerized deployments
• Knowledge of event-driven or reactive architectures
• Previous Staff / Principal / Lead Engineer role
